Which way?
Two routes were put in front of us. The peninsula route was suppose to be the more extreme route that would take us away from civilization for days. It was recommended for experience cyclist and campers, none of those categories fit any of us. We decided to do the inland route that would take us on the candy paved road.
The bad thing about the inland route was that it started in Sidney, BC. We were at Victoria, BC. We had to bike 20 miles north, the same way we came down, to get to Sidney to take a very expensive ferry to Anacortes and then another ferry to San Juan. Three hours wasted on ferries. I just worked on my personal statement. I should've been on the deck looking at the islands, but I knew I'd be looking at them again when I took more ferries to get off them.
The San Juan islands are famous for their bike friendly scenic routes. We were hoping to see many cyclist but that was not the case. We saw, 2? 3? maybe that many. The more for us then, right? The island is beautiful and only Friday harbor was crowded with people. The rest of the island, like 80% of it was unpopulated.
We found an interesting site called the Afterglow Mausoleum. It was made by some rich family that made it big on the island. They built a Mausoleum with a dining table that represented how they had dinner.
Then Heidi broke a spoke on her rear drive side. I did my best to true the wheel up a bit because we couldn't put a new spoke in. The gears were in the way and we didn't have the tool to take them off. We just rode to the campsite.
We skipped English camp :) but we got to San Juan county park. The most amazing hiker-biker campsite ever. Our camp looked out over the water, which also happened to be a big whale watching place.
I met two elementary school teachers at the campsite that were from Brooklyn. They were nice and we had a nice chat about what to do after college. Got some ideas from them about teaching.
We had to get up early because we wanted to get on the earliest ferry to Orcas island.
